The Electrical Contractor License (UP) is an official authorization that allows individuals or companies to undertake electrical contracting work in the state of Uttar Pradesh. This license is issued by the electrical licensing authority and is mandatory for businesses involved in electrical installation, repair, and maintenance work.
Any contractor planning to carry out electrical installation projects in residential, commercial, or industrial buildings must obtain this license before starting operations. The license ensures that electrical work is performed by trained and qualified professionals while maintaining safety standards and government regulations.
To apply for an electrical contractor license in Uttar Pradesh, the applicant must have a registered office in the state, trained electrical staff, valid business registration, and financial capability to undertake electrical projects.
The Uttar Pradesh Electrical Safety Directorate issues Electrical
Contractor Licenses in different categories based on the voltage levels you can work on and
the geographical scope of operations. Choosing the right class is
critical because applying under the wrong category leads to rejection and wasted fees.
Class A Electrical Contractor License is for contractors who want to undertake High Tension (HT) electrical works, including projects involving 33KV and above, anywhere in Uttar Pradesh. It is the highest category of electrical contractor registration and is best suited for large electrical contractors, MEP firms, industrial electrical service providers, EPC companies, and businesses participating in government tenders and PSU contracts.
Class A is the ideal choice if you plan to work on industrial substations, transformer installations, HT transmission and distribution lines, large commercial buildings, manufacturing facilities, or any project involving high-voltage electrical systems. The license also enables contractors to bid for electrical works issued by departments such as UP PWD, UPPCL, UPRNN, and other state government organizations without zone-based restrictions across Uttar Pradesh.
Class B Electrical Contractor License is suitable for contractors undertaking Medium Tension (MT) electrical works up to 11KV. This category is commonly preferred by medium-sized electrical contractors working on commercial buildings, institutional projects, residential townships, small industrial units, and zone-level government contracts. It offers broader project eligibility than Class C while remaining ideal for contractors not engaged in high-tension electrical works.
Class C Electrical Contractor License is intended for contractors carrying out electrical works below 650 Volts. It is generally suitable for residential wiring, retail shops, offices, small commercial establishments, and routine electrical installations. This category is often the starting point for local electrical contractors and electricians looking to undertake legally approved low-voltage electrical projects.
Note : The Tender & Licence team helps you assess which class fits your business based on the kind of work you currently take up and your growth plans, so you do not pay for a higher class you do not need or get stuck with a lower class that blocks larger contracts.

The Tender & Licence team follows a structured process for every Electrical Contractor License application in UP.
We start with your business documents, the type of work you plan to take up, financial position, and the wireman and supervisor licenses already in place. Based on this, we tell you which class (A, B, or C) fits your case and what gaps need to be closed.
The UP Electrical Safety Directorate requires the applicant firm to employ at least one licensed wireman and one licensed supervisor before the Contractor License can be issued. If these licenses are not yet in place, we assist with those applications first.
We compile every required document in the prescribed format. Equipment lists need to match the actual tools available, office address proof must align with GST registration, and supervisor and wireman certificates must be currently valid.
The application is filed at the divisional Electrical Safety office for your district. Forms must be completed in the prescribed format with all attachments.
The prescribed government fee is paid through the official channel. We coordinate the payment and ensure the receipt is attached with the application.
After document submission, the Electrical Safety Inspector typically visits the registered office to verify equipment, operational setup, qualified staff, and overall infrastructure. We prepare you for this inspection so nothing is missed.
Once cleared, the Electrical Contractor License is issued with a unique license number. You can now legally undertake electrical contracting work in Uttar Pradesh as per the class issued.
After submitting the application, the electrical department conducts an inspection process to verify the applicant’s documents, technical capability, and financial stability.
If the applicant fulfills all the requirements and meets safety standards, the Electrical Contractor License is issued allowing the contractor to legally undertake electrical installation work in Uttar Pradesh.
The Electrical Contractor License in Uttar Pradesh is generally valid until 31st March of the following financial year from the date of issue. This means that a license issued in June and one issued in February will both expire on the upcoming 31st March, after which renewal is required to maintain its validity.
To avoid interruptions in business operations, renewal should be filed well before the expiry date. Tender & Licence recommends submitting renewal applications at least 30 days before 31st March, allowing sufficient time for document verification, corrections, or any queries raised by the Electrical Safety Office. Operating with an expired license may result in penalties, project delays, eligibility issues, and disqualification from government tenders and electrical contracts.
The renewal procedure for an Electrical Contractor License in Uttar Pradesh depends on when the license was originally issued during the financial year. This is a practical detail that many applicants do not realize until their first renewal cycle, even though it directly impacts the renewal process and associated costs.
If the license is issued between 1st April and 15th November, standard renewal applies. The renewal application can be filed during the January to March period using the regular renewal fee before the 31st March expiry date.
If the license is issued after 15th November, an additional compliance requirement applies for continuation into the next financial year.
This requirement exists because the license was issued during the latter half of the financial year. The challan and affidavit help formalize continuation into the next financial year.
The Tender & Licence team informs applicants about these requirements at the application stage itself, helping clients understand future renewal costs and timelines. We also assist with affidavit drafting, challan submission, and complete renewal processing to avoid delays or objections.
After handling Electrical Contractor License applications across Uttar Pradesh, our team regularly encounters the same avoidable mistakes that lead to delays and rejections.
One of the most common reasons is employing a wireman or supervisor whose own license has already expired. Applications are often returned during verification when supporting personnel do not hold valid certifications.
Another major issue is selecting the wrong license category. Applying for Class A without the required workforce or infrastructure, or choosing Class C while intending to undertake higher-capacity projects, can result in rejection.
Other common reasons include:
A professionally reviewed application identifies these issues before submission, helping applicants avoid unnecessary delays and repeated office queries.
